This item is handmade and unique and celebrates the slight imperfections of the artist’s hand
Soaring, diving and gliding around the bowl, these birds echo the cut outs and line drawings of Matisse and Braque. The different shades of blue slip are applied in layers with brush strokes clearly visible in order to give the surface a painterly feel that you can get visually lost in. This shallow bowl is food safe and perfect for the kitchen serving individuals with soup or daily breakfast or could be used for dips and mezze dishes. It also could be a lovely accent piece in the home as a splash of bright colour on a side table or to hold jewellery on ones dresser.
Thrown stoneware with layers of slip and finished with a glossy glaze, 2023
Approximate dimensions: 6cm high x 14cm diameter
Living in the countryside, we have fallen in love with bird watching over the years. The Bernwood Forest is home to so many song birds, owls and raptors and we keep a tally of all of our sightings. We are also near Otmoor and every autumn we are lucky to witness the dancing murmurations of the starlings overhead. But best of all was the plucky barn swallows who used to fly into the studio over the summer and keep my company while I was working on pieces. Birds are a joy to watch and I cannot help but use them as motifs in my work.
Each work is completely unique due to the painterly process. Any irregularities in the work are due to the making and firing process and are part of the hand-made quality of the piece.
